(Since then, a number of companies on the list have gone public or been acquired.) The minimum revenue required for 2005 is $200,000; the minimum for 2008 is $2 million.

In the survey, a midsize company is one that employs between 50 and 249 people. Midsize companies in Florida vastly outnumber small and large size companies.

At a ceremony held in Rome, the ten European Business Awards category winners were announced including UK print management company Webmart which scooped the Atradius Growth Strategy of the Year Award, while Global Ethics CEO Duncan Goose walked away with the RSM International Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

Despite the stringent economic climate, those companies shortlisted for the awards averaged an impressive 56% growth in profits. The judging panel, made up of highly regarded academics, heads of state, industrialists, entrepreneurs and media commentators drawn from across the 27 member European States, was impressed by the ability of all entrants to buck the downturn in the global economy and to post a combined turnover in excess of €570 billion.

“2009 has been a highly eventful year for businesses across the globe, not least across Europe. In the face of this environment, our Ruban d’Honneur winners have shown a combination of entrepreneurial flair and strong growth strategies. This approach has awarded them with an average annual growth of 56%, compared to the contraction experienced by a number of their competitors,” said Adrian Tripp, Chief Executive of the European Business Awards.

Presented at a gala ceremony and luncheon in Rome, the award recognised the DVLA’s unprecedented use of commercial tactics to promote a government service. Judges praised the agency for an innovative and successful campaign, which included giving away free low-emission cars in an online lottery.

The DVLA managed to nudge ahead of some very stiff competition to collect the prize, with campaigns from the UK based First ScotRail, IDE Group, LMG and Sony Europe, Optivo GmbH and UNICEF Arbeitsgruppe from Germany, Polish institution Bank Pekao SA, Graphisoft R&D zrt. from Budapest and France’s Société Générale all being nominated in this hotly contested category.

“The standard of entries was particularly high this year. Whittling them down to the final few nominations was hard enough, but in the end it was incredibly difficult to choose just one winner,” said Hardy.

Presented with the award in front of an audience of business leaders and influential figures within the European community, the DVLA emerged as one of the big winners amongst the ninety-nine organisations nominated for the awards, which recognises excellence and innovation in European enterprise.

With a combined turnover of €573billion, the ninety-nine Ruban d’Honneur winners seem to buck the economic trend. According to statistics gathered by the European Business Awards, this year’s nominees recorded an average annual profit growth of 56%.

With all 10 companies demonstrating outstanding growth over the past year, the EBA judges were impressed with the nominees’ proven ability to cope with fluctuating markets. Candidates such as print specialist Webmart – which reported a growth rate of 23.16% in 2008 – have responded to the credit crunch with a range of positive strategies.
